The Royal Cyphers Database is dedicated to recording the numbers of the red and blue embossed revenue and duty stamps from Great Britain between 1701-1922 and their associated law types. The red ones were often on court indenture documents, and the blue on revenue and duty indentures and are the early proofs of contract law.
Call For Stamp Count Reporting
Please email your stamp count, along with images if you would like them featured, as well as any details about buying, selling, info on your collection, how long you have been collecting cyphers, escutcheons, etc., or just report the numbers!
We will post the numbers in our database spreadsheet and update the webpage daily. If you know of anyone who collects these or have seen them around, please send a memo and spread the word!
As part of an application for funding to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, research will be conducted into the various types of law each stamp represents to paint a picture of legal development in Great Britain during the temporal period.
